    - Ten Years of Industry-Academia Cooperation … Full-Scale Launch of Mid- to Long-Term Global R&D Collaboration

     · Global R&D Collaborative Research and Global Talent Development

    - Strengthening Cooperation with Korea`s Top University to Secure Future Competitiveness

     · Expanding Industry-Academia Network Following Opening of KAIST Advanced Maritime Research Center

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is expanding the scope of its industry-academia cooperation with Seoul National University (SNU) College of Engineering, moving forward with mid- to long-term global R&D collaboration and talent development.

SHI announced on the 2nd that it signed an agreement at SNU''''s Gwanak Campus to establish the `SHI-SNU Global Cooperation Center for Future Shipbuilding Technology.`

The signing ceremony was attended by Sung-An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of SHI, and Young-Oh Kim, Dean for Seoul National University College of Engineering, along with officials from the SHI Ship & Offshore Research Institute and the SNU Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Full-Scale Development of Leading Future Shipbuilding Technologies Through Cooperation with SNU

The industry-academia partnership between SHI and SNU began in 2016 and marks its 11th anniversary this year. Over the past decade, the two institutions have achieved mutual growth through joint development of cutting-edge shipbuilding and offshore engineering technologies as well as personnel exchange.

In particular, the two sides have built a sustainable industry-academia cooperation framework by pursuing technology collaboration across a broad range of related industries — enhancing production efficiency through production data analysis, and advancing eco-friendly fuel technology, automation, and nuclear power.

The establishment of this new research center builds on this foundation of achievements and trust, aiming to elevate the quality of cooperation to a new level. It is designed to pursue mid- to long-term, interdisciplinary global R&D collaboration and global talent development for future shipbuilding technology.

The key areas of cooperation are convergence of energy technology across all fields of shipbuilding and offshore engineering; global networking and research collaboration; and development of outstanding global research talent through industry-academia educational cooperation.

Strengthening the Industry-Academia Cooperation Network … Securing Competitiveness in the Shipbuilding and Offshore Industry

SHI is expanding its industry-academia cooperation with Korea`s top universities to strengthen competitiveness in the shipbuilding and offshore industry. Following the opening of the `SHI-KAIST Advanced Maritime Research Center (AMRC)` with KAIST in August, SHI is now pursuing this collaboration with SNU, building a multi-layered industry-academia cooperation network.

The two research centers play complementary roles, each covering research the other cannot. The KAIST center focuses on AI and robotics-related researches to respond to the era of physical AI, which will determine manufacturing competitiveness. Meanwhile, the Seoul National University center combines shipbuilding and offshore engineering`s core technologies with energy technologies to strategically address eco-friendly (decarbonization) and next-generation fuel technologies, pursuing mid- to long-term research projects aimed at creating future markets.

"SNU`s excellent research capabilities and talent have made a significant contribution not only to the development of SHI but also to strengthening Korea`s competitiveness in the shipbuilding and offshore industry," said Sung-An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of SHI. "We will continue this cooperation to establish it as a successful model of industry-academia partnership."
