- SHI and Qatar Gas held an event titled `Thanks for Keeping Us Cool This Summer!`
- The event has garnered attention by displaying a variety of ways to prevent shipyard heat-related illnesses.
On the 25th, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) held an event titled `Thanks for Keeping Us Cool This Summer!` where shipyard workers enjoyed watermelon punch and electrolyte-rich drinks to stay healthy and be protected from heat-related illnesses.
At the Geoje shipyard, food trucks served refreshing watermelon punch and electrolyte-rich drinks to 12,000 workers. Meanwhile, SHI`s Shipyard General Manager (CSO), along with representatives from JP Morgan, Qatar Gas, and Labor Association, patrolled the yard to ensure the workers remained safe and healthy in a heatwave.
SHI provides a 20-minute rest break every two hours when the apparent temperature is above 33 degrees Celsius, and extends the lunch break by 30 minutes when the temperature rises above 28.5 degrees Celsius and by one hour when it exceeds 32.5 degrees Celsius, ensuring that workers receive adequate rest.
Meanwhile, Samsung Heavy Industries is making efforts to lower workplace temperatures by utilizing a variety of tools, such as spot coolers (outdoor air conditioners), icemakers, cooling fog machines, sprinkler vehicles, and sun shelter. To prevent heat-related illnesses, they also provide refreshments with sodium content, cooling buses, and onboard rest areas.
“Health and safety of our workers are our top priorities,” stated Wang-keun Lee, Shipyard General Manager (CSO) of Samsung Heavy Industries. “We will make our utmost effort to create a safe workplace admidst the heatwave.”
“It is very meaningful to participate in SHI’s heatwave safety event,” said Yumei Hetherington, Head Safety Manager of Qatar Gas. “Nothing is more important than everyone working safely.”
